PFAS Analysis

Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Analysis

Pace Analytical has analyzed over 7,000 samples for PFAS/PFCs. In 2017, Pace doubled its capacity for analysis of samples for these compounds and operates four LC/MS/MSs in two locations. To support this analytical testing market, Pace provides experience, capacity, a growing list of applicable certifications, redundancy, and low reporting limits.

What are they called?:

This class of compounds is commonly referred to as:

  • Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)
  • Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs)
  • Perfluorinated Alkylated Acids (PFAAs)

They include Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (PFOS) and related compounds.

Uses:

PFOA and PFOS have been widely used for over 50 years in many industrial applications and consumer products including:

  • Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) – fire-fighting foam used on nearly all DoD sites, fire-fighter training areas, airports, refineries, and industrial facilities around the world
  • Non-stick cookware
  • Stain-resistant carpeting, apparel & upholstery
  • Food packaging
  • Dental floss

Hazards:

PFAS are persistent in the environment, bioaccumulative in wildlife and humans, and are toxic to laboratory animals and wildlife, producing reproductive, developmental, and systemic effects in laboratory tests. Visit the EPA PFAS page for additional information.

Timeline

Pace Advantages:

  • Pace was approved by EPA for its UCMR 3 program in 2012. Since then Pace has analyzed over 7,000 samples for PFAS.
  • Pace is NELAC and state certified in NJ, LA, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, OK, MS, PA, FL, HI, and NY. Most state agencies do not yet have EPA 537 listed in their certification program, and Pace is pursuing state by state certifications as they develop. Pace is currently applying for its DoD ELAP accreditation for PFAS.
  • Pace analyzes water and soil for PFAS.
  • Pace doubled its capacity for PFAS analysis in mid-2016, and doubled it again in mid-2017.
  • Pace offers an extensive compound lists that include GenX compounds NaDONA (Sodium Dodecafluoro-3H- 4,8-dioxanonanoate) and PFPrOPrA (Perfluoro-2- propoxypropanoic acid).
  • Automatic comparison of preliminary data to regulatory and site specific action limits, and automatic notification of exceedances - as it becomes releasable after second level QA review and prior to issuance of final report.
