Carbonyls, Explosives, Oily Waste Extractions and Waste Delisting Services

Carbonyls, including Formaldehyde (SW 846 8315A)

Pace performs laboratory testing for carbonyls, including formaldehyde, using EPA 8315A. This method is an HPLC procedure performed on aqueous and solid sample matrices. Formaldehyde can be found in building materials, insulation, composite wood products, glues, resins, paints, household cleaning products, fertilizers, and pesticides. For aqueous and solid samples, these compounds are regulated under TSCA, RCRA, and Clean Water Act. Pace is experienced in analyzing a diverse range of samples, including groundwater, surface water, wastewater, soil, sediment, and other solid materials.

Explosives (EPA 8330B) + Nitroglycerin and PETN (EPA 8332)

Typically analyzed as part of a Department of Defense (DoD) project or program, Explosives are analyzed using EPA Method 8330B on aqueous and solid samples from environmental sites at military bases, artillery ranges, ammunition plants, and other DoD facilities. The list of common explosive compounds includes HMX, RDX, DNTs, TNTs, tetryl, nitrobenzene, 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, and 3,5-dintroaniline using the 8330B HPLC UV method. In addition, Pace performs EPA 8332 for Nitroglycerin and pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). Nitroglycerin and PETN are highly explosive organic compounds that are found on DoD sites. Pace is a DoD ELAP –certified laboratory and is compliant with the DoD Quality Systems Manual.

Oily Waste Extraction Procedure (OWEP) (1330A)

Pace performs the Oily Waste Extraction Procedure (OWEP) to support hazardous waste characterization and delisting projects. The OWEP is typically performed on waste samples containing concentrations of oil and grease that are greater than 1%. The OWEP is used to determine the mobile metal concentration of oily wastes. Waste sample types on which the OWEP is performed include API separator sludge, oil emulsions, rag oil, and oily wastes derived from petroleum refining.

Waste Delisting Services

Pace is the environmental laboratory testing leader in supporting successful hazardous waste delisting projects. Our experience includes the support of many manufacturing plants in the United States for successful completion of hazardous waste delisting. During each waste delisting project, Pace works closely with the manufacturing facility and environmental consulting firm to create a sampling and analysis plan that achieves the desired data quality objectives. Pace performs the analytical laboratory testing services required to support the waste delisting petition.

The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (which guides EPA’s hazardous waste management programs) and its regulations provide for a process to remove or “delist” a waste generated at a particular facility from the list of hazardous wastes. The delisting process is initiated by the generator (the person creating the waste) who prepares a petition to request delisting of the waste. The petition provides information about the waste, including its chemical composition and characteristics, for the purpose of demonstrating that this particular waste is not hazardous. The petition is reviewed by the appropriate regulatory agency to determine whether the waste is eligible for delisting. Please contact Pace to learn more about our hazardous waste delisting services.
